Our responsible approach

As well as serve up feel-good food you won’t forget, we’re committed to doing whatever we can to have a positive impact on our world and the people around us. Here are a few ways we’re playing our part…

We fight food waste

The already below-average food wastage we have, we donate to FareShare, the UK’s national network of charitable food distributors – and in 2020, our parent company The Restaurant Group donated more than 12 tonnes. We also work with food recyclers Too Good To Go across all our UK sites. Between November 2020 and January 2021, we saved the equivalent of 1312 meals from going to waste.

We hate landfill (who doesn’t?)

We’ve drastically cut down on our single-use plastics (we removed all plastic stirrers and straws back in 2019) – and we consistently divert our waste from landfill, either by recycling or converting it into energy.

We’ve won awards for our energy reduction

We’re always working on ways we can reduce our energy use and emissions. From sourcing our produce locally wherever possible, to investing heavily in energy-saving technologies – to encouraging our teams to get involved – we’re proud to be part of the cleaner revolution. In 2019 we were awarded by the Sustainable Restaurant Association for our energy reduction, and have been shortlisted three times for National Energy Awards.

We look after animal welfare

From our sirloin steaks and bacon cheeseburgers to our fish, we ensure that the suppliers we work with stick to strict standards of animal welfare and sustainability. For our steaks, which are locally sourced from British and Irish farmed beef, the cattle are reared to Bord Bia (the Irish food board) standards, which ensures a high benchmark in safety, traceability and welfare. We source MSC-certified fish rated 3 or below and for farmed fish and seafood we source minimum global gap or BAP 2*. All shell eggs are RSPCA certified free range and we are working towards all eggs as an ingredient being cage free.

We’re into better health

From reducing the sugar content in our milk chocolate sauce, to banning GM foods, MSG, artificial trans fats in any products – and artificial colours in our kids’ menus – we’re committed to keeping our food as nutritious as possible. We are also increasing the vegan options on our menu, both by adding brand new dishes such as Vegan BBQ Wingz and Plantball Hero Sub or reviving existing dishes such as our Vegan Chocolate Fudge Cake.

We respect the people we work with…

As members of the ethical trading initiative Sedex, we’re helping the world improve working conditions and put an end to modern slavery. We believe in being respectful to everyone we work with, from our suppliers to our own employees – from paying a fair wage, to ensuring every tip goes directly to our employees.

… and we try to raise others where we can

We’re also working with job centres around the country to offer guaranteed interviews to people who are long-term unemployed. Plus, we’ve partnered with the charity Magic Breakfast to provide meals to disadvantaged schoolchildren.

It doesn’t stop there…

We are a founding member of Hospitality Zero Carbon Forum and co-chairing working group, moving to measure and report on Scope 3 emissions, and developing roadmap to net zero.
